The Department supports two undergraduate and two graduate study programs: Music Theory and Composition, and was formed by the launch of these programs in the academic year of 2001/2002.
With an exceptionally practical approach, which is traditionally a feature of the treatment of music-theory disciplines in the history of Croatian music education, the specificity of the study program of Music Theory and Composition at the Arts Academy in Split lies in the great representation of researchers in the implementation of the study programs, and the same amount of attention is devoted to the acquisition of three domains of musical competence: theoretical (Solfeggio, Harmony, Polyphony, Musical Forms, Harmony in the 20th Century, Aspects of Music in the 20th Century), practical (Composition, Conducting, Piano, Piano Harmony, Playing from the Musical Score, Instrumentation) and educational (Psychology of Education and Development, Didactics, Music Education, Methodology, Methodical Practice). In accordance with the acquired competences, graduates of both master’s programs are primarily oriented to music schools, but they are also trained to lead various ensembles, compose and arrange, and work in the media and music publishing. The study programs have proven to be flexible for Erasmus collaborations, but also as an excellent foundation for continuing one’s education at the doctoral level (Music Theory, Musicology, Music Education).
The Department of Music Theory and Composition actively cooperates with the The Croatian Association of Music Theorists, The Croatian Musicological Society and The Croatian Composers’ Society.
